Please review this information before paging me after hours. Thank you.

If your child has fever, cough, or other symptoms, even just a slight runny nose, your child may have COVID-19!

Although you may feel quite panicked now, emergency evaluation is usually not needed. Families often want immediate testing. However, many testing sites are closed after hours and testing can wait until the morning. Avoid emergency room and urgent care to minimize spread of infection.

  • Watch your child's symptoms closely overnight. Any symptoms listed below need ER evaluation or call 911.

  • Get rest and stay hydrated. Take over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, to help you feel better.

  • Separate yourself from others.

  • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home.

    • Every family situation and ability to isolate is different. Try your best.

  • Call our office during office hours for advice.  We will help with testing.

  • Stay home to avoid infecting others.

Emergency warning signs for COVID-19. (If someone is showing any of these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately).

  • Trouble breathing

  • Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds

  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest

  • Poor responsiveness, Persistent Lethargy, (Inability to wake or stay awake) Confusion.

  • Some at Increased Risk for Severe Illness should be seen urgently.

** Seek help at the ER or call 911 if you are worried.

Children with certain medical conditions who are at high risk for progression to severe disease may qualify for antiviral therapy.

Potential indications for outpatient therapy in children include lack of vaccination against COVID-19 AND underlying medical conditions. (Immunosuppression, technologic dependence (tracheostomy, ventilator dependence), obesity with other underlying complex medical conditions.)

If your child qualifies as “high risk” and tests positive for COVID-19, anti-viral treatments may be available that can reduce risk of hospitalization and death.
Don’t delay: Treatment must be started within days after symptoms began to be effective. Please page me or seek advice at the emergency room.
