1 - Month Visit

No Vaccine.

1-month old babies continue to demand more attention and cry if not entertained. Often, they seem increasingly “fussy.” Many parents feel their babies have “colic” or are “gassy.” Commonly, families want to try “gripe water” or “gas drops.” (No proven benefit over placebo.)

For many babies, crying begins to increase around 2 to 3 weeks of age, peaking around 6 to 8 weeks of age before gradually tapering off by 3 to 4 months.  Babies should console with carrying or rocking. They especially love being taken outdoors.

Also, babies begin to stool hold. Stool is less frequent, but larger in volume. They may not poop for 2 - 3 days. You might notice your baby trying to poop, pushing, and turning red. After calming down, they usually pass a large amount of mushy soft stool. This is normal. (Not constipation.)

Infants often want to feed more frequently at night. Try to avoid using feeding to sooth your baby to sleep. If you are not careful, babies often want to feed small amounts every 1 hour! After we confirm adequate weight gain, I recommend trying to space night-time feedings to 3-5 hours or longer. Continue feed every 2-4 hours and to interact and play with your baby during the day.  Do you have any concerns regarding sleep?

Development at 1 month:  If upset, able to calm with carrying. / They focus on your eyes and watch you move around the room. Vision is still developing, and eyes may drift. (“Lazy eyes”.)  They may start to smile in response to you.
